Advance your coastal navigation skills in Rhode Island! Take an ASA 105 course.

This is a two-day class done in a classroom. You will learn the navigational theory and practices for safe navigation of a sailing vessel in coastal and inland waters. On-water coastal navigation skills elements are contained in the ASA103, Basic Coastal Cruising, ASA 104, Bareboat Cruising, and ASA 106, Advanced Coastal Cruising, in progressively increasing levels of detail.

Some will take the test on the second day in the afternoon. Most will take what they learned home and ensure they know it well before taking the test at their convenience.

Taught in a classroom environment with a small class size to emphasize individual attention, you will learn to:

  • navigate using traditional methods
  • compensate for currents and leeway and allow for compass imperfections
  • navigate through fog using chart, parallel ruler and divider

You will be able to really understand the information a chart is giving you, and be able to interpret your chart-plotter information better as well.
